Understanding the Chakra System
Share
The mind-body connection is well studied. We know that what we think has the potential to impact how we feel physically. ‘Feeling sick with worry’ isn’t just a saying - we can literally make ourselves sick prior to or after a stressful situation. The placebo effect is the essence of this mind-body connection: if we truly believe something with our mind, our body will follow.
When looking at this concept through the lens of the Chakra system, it provides a framework for how energy, belief and healing move through the body. The chakra system is an energy distribution system where each chakra determines how much energy flows through the body and in which direction. The first three chakras represent our lower self or animalistic nature – the part of us that responds instinctually and represents the “body” in the mind-body connection. The first chakra supports feelings of safety and stability, the second our ability to emotionally regulate and the third reflects our internal compass – our gut instinct.
Our mind or higher self is represented by chakras five through seven. Chakra five represents self-expression and composure – our ability to communicate boundaries in an emotionally aware way. Chakra six helps support the understanding and awareness of how our words and actions have a ripple effect on our lives and the lives of others. It creates the space between reaction and response. Chakra seven supports the realization that our life experiences are reflected in how we choose to respond in each moment. As awareness grows, we can begin to see the consequences of each action and choose to respond differently.
Two chakras haven’t been covered yet – chakra four and chakra eight. Chakra four is our heart chakra and the bridge between our lower and higher self, regulating the flow of energy to the chakras. The heart chakra represents courage, conviction, passion - the 'why' behind our choices. If we are faced with a choice that pushes us outside of our comfort zone, it may cause us to feel the emotions of fear, vulnerability or anxiety and our tendency may be to retreat to what we know feels safe. When this happens, energy is also pulled back, rather than flowing up the body towards the higher self.
When we look at this energetic model of healing, energy flows in a toroid through and around the body, with the heart being the critical juncture that directs flow based on our emotional needs. If we need to feel safe, more energy flows down instead of up. However, for true healing, energy needs to flow up, down, through and around the human body – circulating continually. If we remain stuck in these lower chakras, healing energy is not as available to higher functions.
Having heart, being brave and courageous means taking a step into an unknown, unfamiliar place. When we do this, we reconnect that bridge of energy between the lower and higher chakras and as energy flows, healing can begin.
While the seventh chakra resides outside of our body, it remains part of this toroidal human energy field. The eighth chakra, however, resides outside and represents our soul - our raison-d’etre - that sense of calling we feel deep within our cellular structure that draws us in certain directions without our understanding why.
The first seven chakras represent a static picture of an individual with energy flowing freely, while the eighth chakra represents the dynamic movement of the individual - like a planet spinning on its axis, but also moving on an orbit through the cosmos. It gives direction and higher purpose that fuels more than just energy movement from within. It activates a calling to consider more than ourselves - the bigger picture of the community around us.
Belief – the story we tell ourselves about our life – is the genesis of this mind-body connection and determines how energy flows. If our story is that we are not safe because at one point in our life we weren’t, energy fuels this basic need and over the long run may cause more serious health conditions by preventing the body from fully regenerating.
Flower essences help us to reframe this narrative at a quantum level, calming our nervous system, steadying our heart and helping us to feel safe at a deep cellular level. When the body begins to feel safe, it can begin to release what no longer serves it, the mind can begin to write a new story and the body can heal. And when the mind believes this new story, the heart will direct the body to follow.
